Cruise to Ithaca from Skala – A Journey into Myth and Beauty

The legendary island of Homer and Odysseus is a must destination. In the capital town of Vathi you will feel the nostalgic atmosphere, visit museums and enjoy coffee or shopping. Next port of call is Kioni where you may enjoy a tasty lunch. Swim at two exquisite beaches

A cruise from Skala to the legendary island of Ithaca (Ithaki) is more than just a day at sea — it’s a journey into history, myth, and some of the most beautiful coastal scenery in the Ionian Sea.

Known worldwide as the homeland of Odysseus, the hero of Homer’s Odyssey, Ithaca symbolizes adventure, longing, and the joy of returning home. This spirit still seems alive across the island today, where peaceful villages and untouched nature invite visitors to slow down and enjoy authentic Greek island life.

Hidden Beaches of Ithaca

Ithaca’s coastline is a masterpiece of nature, where lush green hills meet crystal-clear turquoise waters. Many of its most stunning beaches are accessible only by boat, making them perfect stops during our cruise.

Two highlights along our route are Filiatro and Gidaki Beach, both located close to Vathi yet feeling wonderfully remote. Their sparkling waters and quiet surroundings make them ideal for swimming and relaxing away from crowds.

Gidaki Beach

Often considered the most beautiful beach on the island, Gidaki Beach offers dazzling turquoise waters and a wide pebble shore framed by dramatic cliffs. Located just a short distance from Vathi, it remains peaceful thanks to its limited access by land.

Here we pause for swimming, sunbathing, and refreshing dives into some of the clearest waters of the Ionian Sea — one of the highlights of the cruise.

Vathi – The Heart of Ithaca

Our journey continues to Vathi, the charming capital of Ithaca, nestled in one of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful natural harbors. In the middle of the bay lies the small island of Lazareto, home to the historic Church of the Savior.

Although Vathi suffered heavy damage during the 1953 earthquake, the town was rebuilt following its traditional Venetian architectural style. Today, colorful houses climb gently up the hillsides, creating a postcard-perfect setting.

Visitors can stroll along the waterfront, wander through quiet alleys, visit local cafés, or explore the Archaeological and Folklore Museums. A statue of Odysseus reminds visitors of the island’s legendary past and adds to the nostalgic atmosphere.

Kioni – A Picture-Perfect Village

Further north lies Kioni, one of the most enchanting villages in Ithaca. This small, sheltered harbor welcomes sailors from around the world and retains a peaceful, timeless charm.

At the entrance of the bay stand three historic windmills overlooking the village, while traditional houses and narrow alleys preserve the character of the 16th-century settlement. The harbor is lined with cozy tavernas where visitors can enjoy fresh fish and local specialties, making Kioni a perfect stop to experience authentic Ionian hospitality.

Cape Agios Ioannis – Wild Natural Beauty

As our cruise continues, we pass the impressive cliffs of Cape Agios Ioannis, where nature reveals a more dramatic side of Ithaca. Towering cliffs plunge into deep blue waters, with depths reaching nearly 70 meters in some places.

Sea caves carved by the waves and occasional sightings of wild goats add to the raw beauty of this coastal stretch. The sea breeze and open Ionian views here create a memorable final impression of the island.

Koutsoupia Beach – Mini Myrtos

Before heading back, we stop at Koutsoupia Beach, often called “Mini Myrtos” due to its striking resemblance to Kefalonia’s famous Myrtos Beach.

This hidden gem boasts brilliant blue waters and white pebbles, framed by lush hills. Even luxury yachts frequently anchor here to enjoy its untouched beauty. Guests can swim, sunbathe, or simply relax while the boat approaches close to shore for easy access.

A Day to Remember

A cruise from Skala to Ithaca combines mythological history, charming villages, hidden beaches, and unforgettable scenery. Whether you are diving into turquoise waters, strolling through traditional harbors, or simply enjoying the journey across the Ionian Sea, Ithaca offers a truly special experience.

And as Odysseus himself would remind us, sometimes the journey is just as important as the destination.
